7 Questions To Know If You Should Relocate For Work
Have you ever received a dream job offer and wanted to go for it but the only thing wrong is the location? It happens more often than you think, and more people than you think will turn down their dream job rather than relocate. They then end up feeling misery for a long time because they’re unfulfilled. They’re lost, bored and unsure where to go next because they said no to the one thing that they know they want more than anything else.
The thing is, relocation is a big personal ask. Some people find it easy to up sticks and jump from place to place where others prefer to stay in the place they were born and put down roots there. If you receive an amazing job opportunity, you have to consider a move. For example, with Ireland a major hub for data center roles, many people relocate there to start work. You could do the same thing, but these are seven questions that you have to be able to answer to know whether relocation may be the best thing for you to do!
- How will you pay for it? Most of the time, if a company is courting you for a job, you may be able to get them to pay for the relocation for you. It’s a big move and the further away you travel the higher the cost, you also have to consider the cost if you move your whole family. You should talk to your possible employer and get a list of all the costs that they would be willing to cover, especially if this is a short term relocation rather than a forever move.
- How much money will I earn? If you’re uprooting your life for a new country and a new company, you need to ask the big questions like the salary and benefits. You want this to be worth your while. You should feel confident, though, as most places who are willing to pay for a relocation will be happy to pay you the salary to which you are worth! It has to be comparable in the new place you’re going to live, and you should have the salary applicable to your experience.
- Does the company have a future? Whatever it takes to relocate, you need to know that the company you’re locating to work with has a future and isn’t going to fail when you get there! That would put you in a worse position than you were in when you were simply job hunting. Look at the history of the company and ask about their plans in the future so that you can ensure that you are able to stay the course and make a life in a new area.
- Is there room to move? Does your role and the company have a ceiling, or is this role IT for you? You need to know this! You have to know that your career doesn’t end with one job and that you can see a potential path to further your career and do better for yourself.
- Will you find job satisfaction? It’s one of the most important pieces of the puzzle of a new career – you need to know that it’ll be the best thing for you. You have to ensure that your current job is just as satisfying as the one you are leaving, and if you won’t find job satisfaction, you should say no to the opportunity. Your relocation will determine so much about your career and you need the questions to be properly answered.
- Will I get on well with my boss? It’s a big question and one that’s so important to answer. You should have a few meetings with your new team before you go ahead and relocate – just in case these are the people who aren’t for you. It may also work to do a week or two in the role before you permanently move across. You shouldn’t be afraid to spend time with your new boss and get to know them before you commit to the move.
- Am I comfortable with change? You may not be comfortable with your day to day changes, but this is a big life change and you have to know how the change is going to affect you and your family. Take time to get used to the changes that are about to occur with a relocation before you commit to this decision. Take your time and get to know whether this is the right decision!
