What Does Every Start Up Need To Know About Health And Safety?

Employee safety must always be a top priority for every business owner, but when you’ve only recently started your business and only just take on some staff members, it can be hard to know what to do. Read on for some useful advice that will tell you what every start up needs to know about health and safety right from the start.

Make A Plan

The best thing you can do as a business owner is to make a plan regarding the health and safety policies you need to implement well ahead of the time you’re going to need them. So, before you are in a position to hire anyone, you should still take the time to research the rules regarding health and safety and write up the policies that you’re going to need your staff to follow.

This way, when you are ready to hire someone, you will already understand what is required of you as an employer, and you can guide your employee through all the policies and information they are going to need to know about to stay safe. It might seem rather premature to do this so early on, but the sooner you do it, the more time you have to hone it and get it just right, making it much more robust when you do finally need it.

Provide The Right Tools

The specific tools that will be needed will, of course, depend on the sector you’re working in, but the same idea is true for all; as an employer, you need to provide the right tools for the work you want your staff to carry out. This could be anything from vehicles to technical equipment to comfortable workspaces for office workers.

Not only do you have a responsibility to provide the right tools, but you also need to ensure that they are working as they should and are safe to use, plus your employees must be trained in how to use them, with evidence of this training recorded.

Delegate

When you are running a business, you will have a lot on your mind and plenty to do. Adding the health and safety element to this can make things much more difficult than they need to be plus, if you’re busy with other things, it could even mean that health and safety becomes a non-priority task.

This is why it can be useful to delegate this aspect of being an employer to someone else who is experienced in health and safety and knows what to do. A specific health and safety advisor, for example, can ensure that everything is done in the right way.

It Might Still Go Wrong

Finally, as a start up business owner you need to be aware that, even with an excellent health and safety record and when doing everything right, things can still go wrong. Accidents happen, employees can be injured, and you might have to speak to capable mining accident injury lawyers to help you and your staff in a difficult situation.

The best thing you can do in this situation is to follow the advice of your lawyer and help as much as possible. Never blame anyone, and that includes yourself.
