What To Do If Your Small Business Isn’t Thriving

The chances are that when you launched your small business you assumed that it would thrive. Why wouldn’t it? You had a great concept, a fantastic business plan, and a thirst for success. However, things haven’t gone as well as you had hoped and you’ve begun to realise that your little venture isn’t thriving, in fact it’s barely surviving, and you don’t know what to do. 

The important thing in this instance is not to panic; it’s easy to panic when you realise that things aren’t going as well as they could do. However, panicking will only make the situation worse, instead it’s better to think about how you can resolve the issues and get your venture back on track. 

Admittedly, it’s not always easy to know why things are going wrong or what it will take to ensure that your venture sees success, but there are a few things that you should consider. 

Start with the basics

First things first, start with the most basic aspects of your business. Could it be something as simple as your internet is running too slow for you to work effectively? If this is the case, consider swapping to a better provider, such as OCCOM for instance. Or, is your business failing because customers find it hard to contact you – are your communication routes simple and effective? If not, then it might be time to look at upgrading and improving these. 

If the basics of your business are working well, the rest of your business should follow, that’s why it’s so important to take the time to make sure that the most basic aspects of your business are in order and working properly. 

Look at marketing 

The fact is that no matter how incredible your business concept is, if no one knows what you’re offering then you have no chance of success. That’s where effective marketing comes into it; if you are going to ensure that your business succeeds, you need to have a high-quality marketing plan in place. 

If you feel like your current marketing approach isn’t working, take steps to change it. Consider consulting a marketing specialist and working with them on overhauling and enhancing your strategy. 

Ask for feedback

One of the easiest ways to find out why your business isn’t doing as well as it could do is to ask for feedback. Speak to your team members – if you have any, your customers, and anyone else who is part of your business, and ask them for feedback. Don’t just say ‘do you have any feedback’, instead be more specific and ask questions like: ‘what would you say is the worst thing about my company’ or ‘what is something my company does really badly’. 

It’s this kind of feedback that can be valuable for making changes to how your business runs, and can also be vital for getting your venture back on track.
