5 Tips for Upgrading Your Technology to Maximize Your Small Business

As your small business grows, so does your technology stack. You may find yourself in the middle of a technology upgrade or looking to upgrade your small business’s technology. Whether you own a one-person consulting firm or a nationwide enterprise, technology upgrades are key to maximizing your small business’ potential. Here are five tips for upgrading your technology that will serve to maximize your small business’ potential.

Build a Technology Plan

Before you start shopping for new technology, take some time to plan and budget. As your business grows, it is important to know what kind of technology you need. Create a list of the necessary technology and divide it into three categories: required, preferred, and nice-to-haves. Required items are those that are absolutely necessary for your small business to run effectively, such as a functional and easy to navigate website. Preferred items are those that would make your life easier as your small business grows and evolves. Nice-to-haves are those that can be added at a later date if budget allows.

Build in Automation

One of the best ways to maximize your small business is to automate as much as possible. The most successful businesses are constantly looking for ways to save time and energy from menial tasks that can instead be used to generate new ideas. Automation allows you to set your day, week, or even year in advance. For example, if you are a freelancer who charges by the hour, automating certain tasks like setting up alerts or certain client communication will make it easy for you to plan out your schedule in advance and charge accordingly.

Borrow, Donate, or Acquire

One of the easiest ways to get up and running with the latest technology is to borrow, donate, or acquire it. If you’re on a budget and you don’t have enough cash for an expensive new computer or software, consider borrowing one from a friend, donating old equipment to nonprofits such as Free Geek, or buy used in order to cut the costs of new technology.

Hire an Outsider

When you’re considering which technology upgrades are best for your small business, you should hire an outsider to advise you. Hiring someone who works in business IT support will help you identify the best path for your company’s technology. They can also make recommendations for off-the-shelf solutions or a managed service provider. People with this expertise may be pricey upfront, but  will ultimately save your company time and money, making them a valuable asset for growing the technology used for your small business.

Embrace Digital Transformation

There are many benefits to embracing a digital transformation. First, you will be able to reach a broader audience and market your product or service in new ways. You may also get access to highly qualified customers who you might not have been able to reach before. You will also open yourself up to more opportunities for growth. When you think about the digital world, you should consider how it will impact your small business’ operations, personnel and profitability.
