How To Run a Successful Business Remotely

The days of the office feel long gone. A combination of the pandemic and evolving attitudes towards traditional work mean that there is more remote activity than ever before. But is it possible to start and run a successful business if you never meet your staff face-to-face? Can you find success without ever shaking their hand or going for a casual business lunch? The answer is Yes, but you need the right tools to do so.

Get a Reliable Connection

A reliable internet or even data connection is the cornerstone of running your business successful wherever you are in the world. You need to be able to access the internet at any time without downtime, interruptions or the dreaded grey Chrome page, even if the dinosaur game is fun to kill some time. Of course, some destinations are more reliable than others, so you’ll need to make allowances. A flat in the centre of any major city will be better than a makeshift beach shack, so choose your location wisely.

Hire the Right Workers

Hiring the right working is essential for any business but it is even more important when you operate a business remotely. The likes of LinkedIn and freelance platforms like People Per Hour or Upwork can put you in touch with professional and reliable candidates, but this isn’t enough. Any serious entrepreneur should get to know the candidates over video calls while offering test projects to gauge their ability is also useful. Some owners can get desperate and hire the first people who send an email. You mustn’t do this, however, as there’s a risk that things could go wrong before you even get started.

Check-In Regularly

We already know how much different remote work is compared to the traditional office. Unlike what you’re used to, you can’t walk from your desk to theirs to catch up. Instead, you need to find other ways to check in regularly. Weekly teams meetings over Skype or Zoom are a good place to start, especially if you can make this time consistent. You can also use the best conference microphones so everyone can hear you easily. This will prevent any miscommunication and guarantee everyone knows their role for the coming week. Private emails and messages will also help keep everyone on task.

Outline and Communicate Your Goals

One disadvantage of working remotely is that you’re unable to inform your employees about your goals. Therefore, you’ll need to work twice as hard to outline and communicate what you want to achieve. You don’t need to outline a manifesto, but making sure everyone understands what is expected of them will keep motivation high and encourage consistent quality.

Anywhere In The World

Running a business from anywhere in the world is a dream that many people have had, but only now has it become a possible reality for the average entrepreneur. You don’t need multi-million-pound investments or access to a private jet to your very own tropical island. All you need is the right tools to help you stay in touch, outline your goals, and ensure everything goes smoothly.
