To ensure that it’s right for you, you need to think carefully about many different factors. The last thing you want is to make the big move and instantly regret your decision.

Below we are going to take a look at eight questions that you should ask yourself before deciding to work abroad.

Sound interesting? Then let’s get started.

Why do I want to work abroad?

Obviously, one of the most critical questions you need to ask yourself before you move abroad is why you want to do it in the first place. Yes, experiencing life in a different country is excellent, but there is more to it.

While some individuals wish to use their obtained experience to start a business, others seek higher positions and new opportunities. What you desire will impact your final decision in the long run.

Can I afford to relocate?

Once you’ve determined your reason for working abroad, you need to consider your financial situation. Relocating overseas is expensive, and even if you have a job position lined up, you don’t want to leave yourself short on cash.

Remember, you don’t just have to think about the cost of your expenses in your new country, but also things like expat medical cover, and how much it will be to travel and transport your belongings. There is a lot to factor in, and it quickly adds up.

Will I be able to handle the culture shock?

When we first move to a different place, we tend to run on a high. Everything is exciting, fun and we don’t appear to miss our old life.

However, as time goes on, we may experience culture shock and homesickness. This is different for everyone, and you have to make sure that you can handle it. Otherwise, you could find that you’re moving back home sooner than expected.

Do I enjoy my current role?

Before you drop everything and start an entirely new job, it’s crucial to think about your current one and how much you actually enjoy your role. Do you want to experience something similar? Or do you want to switch careers completely?

These questions will help you determine what your best options are when you’re searching for work. Alternatively, you could discover that you love your job so much that you don’t want to leave at all.

What happens if things don’t go as I expect?

It’s easy to plan how you want things to work out in your head, but there are so many issues that can arise when you relocate. To be prepared, you need to have a few different solutions.

For instance, you may want to have extra savings until you find a new job or have backup accommodation arrangements. It really is always better to be organized, just in case of any unfortunate situations.

What other life plans do I have?

Moving abroad to work may be ideal for you now, but don’t forget to take your future into consideration. Things like buying a home and having children can impact your final decision.

It’s not to say that you can’t do all these things abroad, but you may realize it’s not the right choice yet. You could end up waiting until retirement or when you no longer have any significant commitments.

What is my current experience?

Depending on the type of job you want to pursue, you may discover that you don’t have the necessary experience. Every country is different in its requirements, and you might find that you have to take a lower position than what you currently have.

For some, this isn’t important as they will gain new knowledge. However, others may feel more comfortable within their existing role.

What work-life balance do I wish to achieve?

Finally, one of the last things you need to think about when moving abroad is your desired work-life balance. Some countries are known to have incredible work hours and schedules, while others – not so much.

For instance, China has a working week of approximately 41.7 hours, while Denmark sits at 25.9. It really is important to research this when choosing your destination so that you aren’t either underpaid or overworked.

Final words

And that’s it! By asking yourself the questions above, you’ll be able to have a better understanding of whether or not moving and working abroad is right for you. If you find it’s not the right time, try not to be too disheartened. With a few changes, you’ll soon be jetting off on your new adventure.
