Legal Advice

4 Types Of Legal Advice That No Business Can Survive Without

Many small business owners overlook the importance of legal advice. When you think of business lawyers, you probably picture hotshot lawyers brokering multi-million dollar deals but the truth is, even small businesses need lawyers for a lot of reasons. If you are starting your own small business, these are some of the different kinds of lawyers that you need.

Copyright Lawyers

When you first set the business up, choosing a name and a logo etc. are some of the first things you will do. Once you have done this, you need to make sure that your intellectual property is protected so you need a copyright lawyer to help you.

If you want to patent your products to ensure that nobody else can replicate them, there are some tricky legal issues to deal with here as well. If you try to manage copyright on your own and you make some mistakes with it, you leave yourself vulnerable in the future. So, it’s best to bring a lawyer in to sort these things out for you.

Criminal Lawyers

Most business owners hope that they won’t need criminal lawyers, but you can never be sure what will happen. It’s important to screen employees before you hire them but there is always the chance that somebody that works for you will engage in criminal activity. If that is the case, you should seek the advice of accomplished criminal defense attorneys because your business could get caught up in the whole thing. If you are liable for the actions of your employee, you will need a lawyer to defend you.

Employment Lawyers

When your business starts expanding and you are hiring lots of new employees, it’s worth bringing an employment lawyer on board. There are a lot of laws surrounding employment and they can be confusing for new business owners. The problem is, you will find yourself in a lot of trouble if you inadvertently break employment laws. An employment lawyer will help you manage paperwork and keep everything above board when you are hiring and firing employees.

Contract Lawyers

Every business owner has to use contracts at some point, so it’s a good idea to brush up on basic contract law. But sometimes, your business needs to sign very complex contracts with suppliers or partners and unless you are a legal expert, you’ll probably be overwhelmed by all of the jargon, if you even manage to read the whole thing. But it’s never a good idea to sign a contract that you don’t really understand because it will come back to bite you in the future. It’s also impossible to negotiate a contract if you don’t have a full understanding of what all of the terms mean. When you feel out of your depth, you should always hire a contract lawyer to look over everything for you and help you negotiate a better deal.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your small business doesn’t need legal advice because you do. Every small business needs to use these kinds of lawyers at some point.
