Small and medium-sized business owners have been advised on ways to boost online visibility and ensure they remain in the same conversations as big brands.

Public relations experts at Motive PR have highlighted five methods that SMEs should incorporate to strengthen their online presence.

SMEs often struggle to compete against large corporations in the current economic climate, but with a consistent and well-executed online strategy, even the smallest companies can increase their visibility in an increasingly crowded and competitive marketplace.

Recent research found that visibility remained one of the biggest barriers to growth for small businesses in the UK, with 38% of small business owners saying they don’t have the time or money to promote their business. *

But for businesses to succeed, visibility is critical – especially in 2026 where social media platforms and AI-powered tools like Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT are reshaping how people search for information.

Research also revealed more than half (55%) of SME leaders relied on word of mouth and repeat custom to grow, highlighting a real opportunity for small businesses to amplify their online presence in order to expand their reach and attract new customers. *

Laighton Powell from Motive PR, said: “A common misconception about PR is that it’s only for big and established companies who need help keeping a polished reputation, but that’s not entirely the case.

“It’s actually a great marketing tool for small businesses and start-ups wanting to take on their larger competitors. And when combined with SEO and social media, it helps build long-term trust and credibility, which is particularly important as search behaviour continues to evolve.

“With more than a third of small business owners stating visibility as their biggest barrier to growth, a consistent and well-executed online strategy can make a real difference to your businesses long-term success.”

Five ways small businesses can improve their online visibility;

Consistent PR strategy

PR builds credibility through earned media coverage, putting your brand in front of new audiences and potential customers. Through targeted outreach, coverage in well known publications, and positioning you as experts in your field, a well-executed PR strategy will ensure your name is always in the conversation amongst big brands.

Website optimised for SEO

Optimising your website for SEO is crucial for online visibility, as it increases your website’s presence and ensures your website ranks higher on Google, leading to more organic traffic and greater exposure to a broader audience. SEO optimisation is comprehensive and requires a consistent, patient approach, but some of the key actions include keyword research, optimising on-page elements, and building high-authority backlinks.

Leverage social media

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are overtaking Google as the search platform of choice for younger generations. Through shareable visual content, attention-grabbing short form videos, and building connections through user-generated content, a social media strategy for small businesses offers a powerful, cost-effective way to enhance your brand’s visibility.

Create high-quality content

Google prioritises pages that are relevant, engaging and high-quality. If you produce valuable content for your website, then it will help you to rank higher in search results, boosting visibility. PR can help with this, through well-researched blogs and thought leadership articles, and it also supports SEO performance.

Encourage customer reviews

Customer reviews can be a powerful marketing tool for SMEs wanting to boost their visibility, and Google even prioritises businesses with frequent and high-quality reviews. Almost 93% of people read online reviews before buying anything, showcasing their importance. Encouraging customers to leave reviews will help boost your website’s SEO ranking and build credibility.
